From the early days of the Kodak cameras it was standard practice to refrain from smiling. Some frowned, a few scowled. As the twenty's dwindled into the Thirty's the faces melowed and people looked decidedly friendlier.
This approximate 1924 May Pole picture was taken at the new brick school location in 1924 herlding their May graduation celebration. They earned it and took full advantage.
Some day some body will say, "Hey that's me!" We will be ready to pounce on every word and piece of information.

This was taken late enough in life that not only were a few smiles in order but some recognizable faces.

1948 - 49 3rd & 4th grade at the Clayton Grade School. I see Larry Clouse skipped School again.
None of the old timers recall exactly where the two original schools were located but this is a theory. With the advent of the new Brick School in west Clayton this second school became a private residence, its located on the rise leading to the main road. There is no other hill in Clayton and is obviously the correct location.
One Deer Park, Two Clayton but all three perfect young Ladies. Katherine Fisher, Lucille Tobeck and Norma Lindh.
These young men are really strutting their stuff for some very special occation. This is the second school located adjacent to the railroad tracks and the downtown business district which places it just west where the Tobeck's store was in the 60s (100 yds SW of the Grange Hall).
When the new brick school house was completed the old school was sold as a private residence, later moved to its present location and transformed into the Clayton Tavern where, given a rather less sophisticated corriculum, education continued .This building was the second school built in Clayton. There is no recorded photo of the first one. Thus many Bar owners came and went over the years. Then in the mid 1940s the daughters of Mr. Homer Young, Helen and Ellen made the purchase. Helen is pictured here. Hamburgers sold for 15 cents. Best ever! This was during the heyday of the Brickyard. The Clayton Mercantile was in full swing and the town and the smaller busiesses thrived. The Youngs later sold to brothers Homer and Elmer Holcomb. Loren and Pearl Major bought the Ramble Inn from the Holcombs. Some years later another couple took possession, Joe and Margie Malek. All owners were fine upstanding citizens as are the owners of today. And also as of today, each and every one has undoubtedly received a liberal education in "The Old Clayton School house on Main Street, USA.
