DEER PARK # 3

Sue Rehms assembled a photo album combining any number of news clippings and articles. Many are of the early days of Deer Park. Others can be viewed on the Clayton pages as well as Clayton class pictures.

The community of Deer Park had exceptional fortune in its early years. A number of infuential people decended on the little city in the very beginning. One being Mr. Walter M Leuthold. Owner of the Deer Park Pine for 42 years. The city of Deer Park regarded Mr. Leuthold very highly and treated him with dignity. Mr. Leuthold returned the favor.

Though a picture of serenity it may not have been entirely so. The responsabilty of ownership bares heavy loads. Scarcely a day or even an hour goes by that a decision must be made. But it's the challange that makes it worthwhile.

Mr. Leuthold saw the mule trains come and go, the massive horse drawn logging wagons.

Only to be replaced by the steam powered tractor.

Soon the steam Tractor was replaced by the Shay Steam powered locomotive. Designed and built short coupled but powerful, narrow gauged for negotiateing sharp narrow wooded ravines. This period known as the machine age would prove a somewhat trying time for the Leutholds because of the magnitude of expence was escalating far beyond the cost of horse drawn logging. Most of the cost was offset by the huge volume of railcars loaded with unbeivable load sizes by comparison.

Deer Park Pine, over a period of time owned 5 steam engines. Three regular run of the mill engines and both of these Lima made Shay steam engines.

Even from its very inception Deer Park Washington was steeped to its very soul in the thankfulness to God. Mrs. Short, a devout Christian, turned her boarding house into a combination Sunday School and Church right up until the enevitable happened. Let your gaze flow to the next photo and look far in the background.

And there, looming in the distance stands the very first Church. The open door Congregational Church.

The Zion Lutheran Church, first located just east of Clayton for some 50 plus years as Trysil Lutheran Church, then made the long slow journey to Deer Park where it has served for anther 60 years and still going strong. Shown here are Paul and Jan Morden with older brother Patrick and Kenneth is about to be baptized.

We are hopeful the legend of the Steltings will live on forever.

Mr. & Mrs. Floyd Tew of Deer Park, The Tews owned and operated an auction yard for many, many years south of Deer Park. Another Sue Jenkins Rehms gem.

Doctors Ernie Kettel and Dean Snook were well respected veterinarians for many years in the Deer Park-Clayton area.

Now you know what is meant by, right from the horses mouth.

This is about all that remains of the oldest Cemetery in the Deer Park area.

This Deer Park street scene is the first the CDPHS has seen. Gleaned from none other than the Bamonte 'Spokane and the Inland Northwest' and compliments of the archives of Deer Park native's Joan and Barry Reuthinger.

This Altar painting was presented to Trysil (now Zion in Deer Park) Lutheran Church near Clayton in 1909 by Herman Johnson's Uncle Eugene Burgh. The story of the painting of this master piece is told in "Homesteading at Clayton" by Herman Johnson. It can be found at the beginning of the Website.

There are a number of photos in this page with a religious connotation. This panorama depicts the beauty of Deer Park’s Open Door Congregational Church. The beauty didn't stop there. In the Casket rests one of Gods greatest works ever, Alwood Aamodt.

These concrete remnants of the Arcadia Orchards flume system are located just south of Staley Road. They are west of HWY 395 between Dennison and Sherman Roads. This location is several miles south of Deer Park. The orchards ranged several miles south of this location.

The Deer Park train depot was moved twice, rather than being built on site.

Mr. Griswald taught 8th grade at Crawford Junior High (The old high school, now the Deer Park City Hall.) in 1958-59. The 7th and 8th grade classes started out the school year at the DP Grade School. When the "new" high school (Now DP Middle School) opened in November of 1958 the 7th and 8th graders moved in.

This is the very first automobile built by Henry Ford in 1896, two years after the first buildings were hoisted on Main Street, Deer Park, WA.

Deep in the archives of CardCow.com vintage post cards lays this 1909 photo of Main St. Deer Park. So far no one in our society recognizes the photo.
